Alan A. “Scotty” Herd, CRE, FRICS

Prominent in the Real Estate Industry since 1963

Alan A. “Scotty” Herd entered the real estate business in 1956 and worked part time while in college. After graduation from UC Berkeley with a degree in business administration/real estate, he joined his father’s firm in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills until forming his own firm in 1966.
In 1963, at the age of 25, he was elected president of the West Hollywood Realty Board, seated as the youngest board president in the nation, and began teaching real estate classes at UCLA Extension. His subsequent involvement in real estate education resulted in seats on eleven community college and UC Extension real estate advisory committees as well as the UCLA Anderson School of Business Real Estate Advisory Committee and the California Real Estate Commissioner’s Real Estate Education and Research Advisory Committee. He has been an officer and/or director of three associations of Realtors, a member of the professional standards panel of both his local and state Realtor associations, as well as a fourteen term director of the California Association of Realtors.
Mr. Herd has been awarded the CRE designation from the American Society of Real Estate Counselors, the GRI (Graduate, Realtors Institute) designation from the California Association of Realtors, Fellow status in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and membership in Lamda Alpha International, honorary land economics society.
He has been involved in more than 2,000 real estate transactions as either a manager or salesman and has formed more than fifty limited partnerships and joint ventures. He has served as president of three property owner associations (HOAs).
He has taught and written articles on real estate consulting and his consulting clientele has included two university systems and several Fortune 100 companies. He was the principal author on real estate consulting in the State of California Real Estate Reference Book.
He has been engaged as a litigation consultant by more than 200 law firms in more than 650 cases in Southern California, including a third of the fifty largest law firms in Los Angeles County. He has testified as an expert witness more than 250 times.
He is a native of Los Angeles, a former Marine Corps reservist, and is licensed as a real estate broker in California, Colorado and Arizona.
